HIPAA Privacy and Security Extensions in the HITECH Act:
This Time, We Mean It

On 17 February 2009, HITECH was signed into law as part of ARRA, significantly extending certain HIPAA security and privacy requirements, as well as setting the stage for increased enforcement. The act provides substantial Medicare and Medicaid incentives for hospitals and physicians to adopt electronic health records (EHRs) and provides grants for the development of HIEs. Covered entities and business associates should act now to comply in a defensible manner.
