Encryption Plus® Hard Disk 7.0 Awarded Common Criteria Certification
Certification Confirms Security Offered by Windows Disk Encryption Application
SAN RAFAEL, CA -- PRNewswire/April 15, 2003 -- Today, PC Guardian (http://www.pcguardian.com) developer of data encryption software for enterprise PCs, announced that the company's full-disk encryption application, Encryption Plus® Hard Disk 7.0, has been certified under the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) Common Criteria Evaluation and Validation Scheme against the international Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluation (known as the "Common Criteria"). Encryption Plus Hard Disk runs on Windows XP, 2000, and NT. The application controls access to the Windows operating system, all software applications, and all data created by those applications stored on computer hard disks. It provides pre-Windows user authentication services and protects data by using a strong a 256-bit AES algorithm to encrypt each sector of the disk.
The Common Criteria is an internationally agreed-upon set of IT security standards that government agencies and businesses can use to evaluate the security of computer systems and applications. Encryption Plus Hard Disk 7.0 has been certified to Evaluation Assurance Level 1, which means the "Target of Evaluation (TOE) functions in a manner consistent with its documentation, and that it provides useful protection against identified threats," according to NIAP.
The Common Criteria EAL1 award was presented to PC Guardian President Noah Groth at the RSA Security Conference, in San Francisco, CA.
"This is an important first step toward providing customers with greater assurance that Encryption Plus Hard Disk 7.0 will perform as promised," said Groth. "But this is only the first step, and we will soon submit Encryption Plus Hard Disk and its cryptographic module to independent labs for additional evaluation and security certification."
The evaluation was performed by McClean, Virginia-based CygnaCom Solutions, a subsidiary of Entrust, Inc., and a NIAP-approved testing laboratory.
According to J. David Thompson, the CygnaCom Security Evaluation Laboratory Director in charge of the study, "The evaluation demonstrated that the encryption and decryption functions of Encryption Plus Hard Disk 7.0 met the security requirements contained in the Security Target."
The Security Target is a detailed document prepared by PC Guardian that describes security services and operations of Encryption Plus Hard Disk 7.0. The Security Target Document is available from PC Guardian.
