Windows Hard-Disk Encryption Software Eases Password Recovery

Encryption Plus Hard Disk from PC Guardian Offers Simplified Self-Service Recovery, Reduces Password Reset Costs

SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA -- January 13, 2003/PRNewswire -- Today, PC Guardian (http://www.pcg-tech.com), developer of data encryption software for enterprise PCs, announced it has expanded the number of password recovery options available for Encryption Plus Hard Disk, the company's award-winning Windows access-control and full-disk encryption solution.

"Encryption Plus Hard Disk 7.0.9 expands the number of password recovery options available to users and administrators of the program, making authorized recovery easier while lowering the total cost of owning and maintaining the software," says PC Guardian President Noah Groth.

An easy-to-use utility also permits administrators to upgrade previous releases of Encryption Plus Hard Disk 7 to take advantage of these new capabilities, adds Groth.

Administrators choose any combination of three methods for recovery:

  1. Corporate and Local Administrator password recovery, which require physical access to the user's computer.
  2. Web-based One-Time Password with audit logging, which allows administrators to generate One-Time Passwords for users securely over the Internet.
  3. Authenti-Check(r), PC Guardian's unique workstation-based self-service password recovery technology, which uses encryption and a secure question-and-answer methodology to authenticate users and automate password resets. Authenti-Check does not require interaction between administrative staff and users.
  4. Authenti-Check significantly reduces an enterprise's Help Desk costs, according to Groth, because users will never need to contact an administrator to recover forgotten passwords.

Groth notes that PC Guardian's customers report that one-third to one-half of Help Desk calls are due to forgotten passwords. "Fear of forgetting passwords is the biggest barrier to users adopting encryption, and the costs of recovering forgotten passwords is often the biggest barrier for administrators," says Groth.

Encryption Plus Hard Disk runs on Windows XP, 2000, and NT, controlling access to the Windows operating system, software applications, and data created by those applications via pre-Windows user authentication as well as strong data encryption. The program uses a 256-bit AES algorithm to encrypt every byte stored on the disk.
