University of Louisville Selects GuardianEdge to Protect Sensitive Data for Faculty, Staff, Doctors and Researchers

GuardianEdge Solutions Secure University’s Laptops, Smartphones and Other Endpoints

SAN FRANCISCO – October 27, 2008 -- GuardianEdge, the leader in enterprise endpoint data protection, today announced that the University of Louisville has selected the GuardianEdge Hard Disk Encryption, Smartphone Protection and Device Control solutions to safeguard data for faculty and staff, doctors and researchers.

The University of Louisville is an urban, state-supported school with more than 20,000 students. The school is comprised of three campuses and includes the University of Louisville Healthcare Academic Medical Center, with a relatively open environment for researchers and doctors to share information. IT managers on the campus received reports about devices being lost and stolen, and were aware of other organizations’ data losses and their crippling effects. As the Director of Information Technology, Enterprise Security, at the school whose motto is "It’s happening here," Brenda Gombosky wanted to make sure data breaches weren’t included in that statement. Gombosky said she and her IT team needed to do something proactively.

"It's just amazing the things that people have on their laptops," said Gombosky. "We wanted an encryption solution that was centrally managed so if, for example, a researcher or doctor is out of the area and forgets his or her password, they can call back to the helpdesk and recover it. We are now starting to use Active Directory to manage the system, and also like that the end users don’t have to determine what they need to encrypt. With other products that we evaluated, the burden really fell on the end users. The way that GuardianEdge’s products work is seamless."

Gombosky said she and her team selected GuardianEdge during their vendor trial because of the breadth of the offerings, including smartphone encryption. The University of Louisville is in the process of deploying 250 licenses of GuardianEdge’s Smartphone solution as well as 3,000 licenses of Hard Disk Encryption and 1,000 licenses of Device Control. The University’s deployment of the Device Control solution will soon be replaced by the new version of GuardianEdge’s Removable Storage product. This solution lets users securely transfer encrypted data to any computer using removable storage devices.

The solutions being deployed are part of the GuardianEdge Data Protection Platform, which delivers strong encryption and granular, policy-based access controls, centrally managed administration, and ease of deployment and management. With strong pre-boot user authentication and full disk encryption, GuardianEdge Hard Disk Encryption ensures that the university has a premium level of protection against the compromise of sensitive information. Additionally, GuardianEdge Device Control enables users like the University of Louisville to prevent the unauthorized transfer of data from PCs by restricting user access to external devices and ports. GuardianEdge Smartphone Protection safeguards key intellectual property and private, sensitive or legally protected data on smartphones.

"Every day, the University of Louisville’s faculty, staff, doctors and researchers deal with confidential information such as health records, social security details and other private data," said Ram Krishnan, senior vice president of products and marketing at GuardianEdge. "They trust GuardianEdge to secure their endpoints so that the university can focus on what is important—their research and patient care. Our endpoint encryption solutions give enterprises and institutions like the University of Louisville the necessary tools to secure sensitive information, while also addressing strict regulations like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act."

Gombosky says the next step for her and her team is to increase awareness of privacy and data protection issues within the university. She says, "If something does happen, no matter how small the loss, at least we can say that we have a protection plan in place that makes sure that the information that resided on the machines is safe."

Gombosky and Krishnan are scheduled to participate in an eSeminar titled, "Defend Your Mobile Data — Deploying an Enterprise Encryption Solution" on October 28. During the presentation, Gombosky will discuss her experience deploying large-scale encryption solutions at the University of Louisville and advice she has for other organizations looking to do the same.
