Encryption Plus® Hard Disk - Common Criteria Certified Version 7.0

Encryption Plus Hard Disk 7.0 is a full-disk encryption program that is certified against the Common Criteria at Evaluation Assurance Level 1 (EAL1).

You can verify this certification by visiting the EAL 1 certification page for Encryption Plus Hard Disk, located on the Common Criteria Web site.

Background

EP Hard Disk 7.0 was initially released in July 2002. The program earned Common Criteria certification at EAL1 in April 2003. While development of the program has continued since that time, GuardianEdge continues to offer the certified version. A future version of EP Hard Disk will be certified at a higher assurance level (EAL4). For more information about EP Hard Disk, see the main product page.

About the Common Criteria

The Common Criteria Evaluation and Validation Scheme (CCEVS, or "Common Criteria" for short) was designed in the 1990s to replace a series of US Department of Defense guidelines and various schemes implemented by the defense agencies of Western nations. The Common Criteria provides for the evaluation of computer security products by trusted third-party labs according to a standardized set of criteria.

The Common Criteria is an international standard (ISO 15408) that was developed by the United States, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. The standard has been additionally recognized by Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Norway, Finland, Greece, Sweden, Austria, and Israel. In addition, numerous non-governmental agencies –– such as BITS, a non-profit consortium of 100 of the largest financial institutions in the United States –– have formally integrated the Common Criteria into their security certification programs.

In the US, the program is managed by the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP), a joint activity of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Security Agency (NSA).

You can find out more about the Common Criteria at the NIST web site or by reviewing the two Securius Newsletter issues dedicated to explaining and critiquing the scheme: Common Criteria — Part 1 and Common Criteria — Part 2. The Securius Newsletter is a free offering sponsored by GuardianEdge.
